We Were Liars
We Were Liars. Oh. My. Word.
I have just finished this book (Literally - hours ago as I'm writing this) and my only question right now is WHERE HAS THIS BOOK BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!?!!
Okay before I proceed, I'd like to say: !!SPOILER ALERT!! ( Don't say that I never warned you...)
So its been hours since I've finished and I wanted to write up this blogpost right now because I want to document as much of my emotions as I can before I forget, because I am SO overwhelmed, I really don't know will I be able to get over this, being the awfully sentimental person I am.
I feel bewildered, cheated, sad, emotional, excited, doubtful, unsure, glad, and basically ALL THE FEELINGS IN THE WORLD.
I really don't know how to coil this book into one word, sentence or phrase - It really just speaks a lot for itself. Wait hang on, I have not even introduce this book! This is the first book by Emily Lockhart's that I've read, and it only makes me want to read more of her creations. The story is very fast paced (in my opinion), things escalate generally very quickly and if you're anything like me, you would picture scenes in your head which reading. And in We Were Liars, scenes just come and go and come and go, changing all. the. time. The story is based around the privileged, beautiful, infamous Sinclair family but the main characters are 3 of the cousins and a family friend. The story shows how family bond can be so destructive sometimes, and also how friendship and romance can overpower family relationships sometimes. It also shines on how these 4 characters bond, everyday into basically soulmates. I'd say it is a tiiinyyyy weeenieeee bit confusing at the start, just because the characters are introduced kinda all at once and quite abruptly - but there is a family tree and a map of the island, Beechwood, at the start of the book so that should come in handy. It did for me at least. Again, its nothing you can't cope with and you'll settle in well as you read.
Many that I know who has read this have read it in one, maximum two sittings, it wasn't quite the case for me coz I'd say I'm quite a slow reader. So considering I finished this within 4 days (with a lot of breaks in between), I'd say that was quite fast (HAHAHAHAHA). But if you're a bookworm or just a fast reader, you can finish this book in no time, because TRUST ME, it is a PAGE-TURNER. If I did not take that many breaks, I would literally just be sat on the couch with my nose in this book, because I simply just wanted to know more, especially when you know there's a huge reveal in the end (Yes I knew that...)
Speaking of the end.... a huge twists awaits you - but don't worry, I won't spoil it for you. I just wanted to mention how I love this book subtly covers the topic of mental health, addiction, independence, romance, friendship, family etc. - basically things we face daily so for some of you, this book could be extremely relatable. These are things that are not getting enough attention in terms of real life examples, and what better way than a book for someone to comprehend it better. Its also brilliant how Emily Lockhart had just managed to pull it off - such an eventful, amazing, dark story that managed to fit into 200+ pages only, thats amazing.
Trust me, this is one to read. Its probably my favourite book thus far, up there with Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Once you've read it, you'll feel just the same as I did and find yourself vigorously flipping through the back pages to look for hints (You probably missed many!). And you'll feel somehow mad at yourself that you didn't quite see this coming - yes you expected a twist, but nothing of this sort. If at this point you're feeling quite discombobulated, and are wondering:" What is this person on about..." you probably haven't read it and that should be what you're doing!! If you have, I HOPE YOU FELT THE SAME AS ME!! I'm literally so excited for some reason. Jeez. Another thing I'd like to point out is how gutted I feel by the ending - I felt that Emily Lockhart could have done a much better job with the ending, probably not so abrupt or something. I understand that a cliffhanger is reasonable but I was left with simply TOO many unanswered questions which I had to google up later on.
Anyway, I'm gonna stop here, and tuck myself in and then slowly take in this entire story because right now, I'm still struggling to believe that Emily Lockhart actually WENT THERE. Again, if you have yet to read this book - I highly recommend it, it is definitely a wise pickup. However, I'd like to stress that you should by NOOO means google up reviews, spoilers, hints or whatsoever. I actually started off this book KNOWING there's gonna be a huge twist, so when I got to the twist I was like :" Yeah this is fucking sad I'm bawling my eyes out but God, damn it I was already anticipating this." and it didn't feel AS good as how a revelation of a twist should be (still phenomenal though). So yeah, really go in blindly with this book and allow it to guide your senses - make predictions throughout the way, thats perfectly fine but DON'T google ANYTHING!! If you wanted to know the rating of this book, it is a 3/5 (but I reckon it should've been at least a 3.5).
Okay I'm gonna stop rambling now DON'T FORGET TO GRAB THIS BOOK AND SAVOUR IT SLOWLY! (Or quickly if you wanna find out asap!) And if you've already read it and enjoyed it as much as I do - remember to pass it onto someone! (Because for me, as soon as I finished it, I was like: I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS.)
P/S: I have created a pinterest board dedicated to just this book, so here's the link if you guys wanna check it out! < https://www.pinterest.com/sonialims/we-were-liars/ >
